Action Learning Report Quotes |

Action Learning
"This action learning project clearly identified the need for mechanisms to be available to provide the peer support, contact and feedback, which set members experienced and greatly welcomed in sets and which clearly for some, was not available to them elsewhere. Whilst action learning itself may not be the solution, there is a need for this requirement among peers to be addressed, perhaps as an element in the development portfolio available to staff in the sector." "Action Learning seems particularly suited to third sector leadership in lots of ways and is very well-suited for leaders. I think it's particularly useful given the propensity for leaders to feel so isolated and with little time/money/supprt for development" "Using Action Learning for group and common issues as well as individual issues, say linked to existing networks and forums. This could also assist sustainability not of individuals sets but of learning about the method and value of it within particular networks" "Key for me is getting more people who know about it. Key success measure for me is if people can self-facilitate at the end and therefore continue" |

Action Learning Sets for Third Sector Leaders |
|
Action Learning Sets
In the autumn of 2006, the Third Sector Leadership Centre and Action Learning Matters launched 2 action learning sets for third sector leaders in the East of England and Northwest England.
What are the benefits? One of the most important elements of good leadership is knowing how to manage complexity. Being part of an action learning set for leaders imparts an opportunity to confidentially share challenges and issues of this complexity. In particular, it helps develop the generative leadership skills around decision-making, relationship-building and creative problem-solving. Some of the benefits to one’s personal effectiveness that may arise from doing action learning include:
- Bringing different perspectives to challenges and decision making
- Offering creative, open-minded solutions
- Exercising incisive, independent judgement
- Exercising leadership responsibly and with integrity
Mid-set evaluation What are the issues that are being addressed? Are third sector leaders finding the sets to be useful? Are action learning sets proving to be a useful form of leadership development? Read case studies of participants in the sets and the interim evaluation report and case studies:
